The World No Tobacco day was observed in the North West Region, Cameroon and World wide today under the theme "Tobacco a threat to development".

The day was used to propose measures that Government and the public at large could  implement to promote health and development by confronting the global tobacco crisis.
The World Health Organization WHO has called on Governments to implement strong tobacco control measures such as banning advertising and marketing of tobacco, promote plain packaging of tobacco products, raise excess taxes and make indoor, public places and workplaces smoke-free.

Statistics from WHO indicate that over 7million people die every year world wide due to the direct or indirect consumption of tobacco, a figure predicted to grow to more than 8million a year by 2030 without intensified action.

Health officials in the North-West region on this day encouraged a 24-hour period of abstinence from all tobacco consumption, a gesture that cuts across the globe.
